By the beginning of the 18th century, Hungary infiltrated economically and politically into the Habsburg Empire. It supplied the Czech and Austrian provinces with agricultural products by which it further increased the already existing structural backwardness of the home industry. Because of the underdeveloped home industry, bourgeois social reforms were initiated by the liberal higher and smaller nobility, and the intellectuals. In the spring of 1848, the civil revolution triumphed in Hungary. In the autumn of 1848, the Habsburg launched an armed attack against the Hungarians. In the autumn of 1849, the Hungarian Army succumbed in a heroic struggle. The defeat was followed by a severe retaliation.
In 1867 Budapest was elevated to joint capital with Vienna. The Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary was established and the spectacular Parliament building later built in Budapest.
