The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy

rtc

The conditions of a political compromise became ripe in 1867 between the Habsburg and the Hungarian nobility. A new form of government, the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy came into being, lasting for 51 years.

The compromise accelerated the process of achieving middle-class status and modernization, and gave opportunity for the closing up to the developed states of Western Europe. However, by the turn of the century, because of the unsolved social and nationality issues, the dual system faced a crisis. This was further worsened by the deterioration of the Monarchy's international status. After four years, the First World War starting in 1914 ended with the disintegration of the Monarchy and the revolutions which closed down a full historical period.
