Public education in the dualist period was characterised by a high efficiency, the school types satisfying different social demands. A European level public education act, which served for the elimination of illiteracy, was associated with the name of the Minister of Education baron József Eötvös. Secondary schools guaranteed the possibility of social ascension. The academic grammar school-leaving exam enjoyed the greatest social esteem. The aim of the grammar school educationl was to provide general human education and to prepare for university and college studies. After stormy debates, in 1896, the first eight-year academic grammar school for girls was opened.
