The Northern mountains

rtc

From among Hungary’s mountains, the Northern volcanic origin mountain range is peculiarly similar to the Carpathians. The bituminous coal and ore deposits had an important role in the foundation of Hungary’s industry. Its parts are the Börzsöny, the Cserhát, the Mátra, the Bükk, and the mountains of Zemplén.

Mátra is the remainder of a former volcano similar to Etna. The acidulous water springs are the traces of the former volcanic activity. Here we have find Hungary's highest peak, Mount Kékes (1014 m), surrounded by brown soil covered by beech forests and whose lower slopes produce a remarkable wine. Many visitors are attracted by the mineral springs near Parádsasvár.
