Minorities in Hungary

rtc

The law LXXVII. of 1993, acknowledges 12 national minorities in Hungary: German, Croatian, Slovakian, Romanian, Bulgarian, Greek, Polish, Armenian, Ruthenian, Serbian, Slovenian, Ukrainian, and one ethnic minority:Gypsies.

According to national census figures, the number of persons belonging to minorities is quite low in Hungary. The Roma represent about 400,000 individuals, followed by 200,000 of Germanic origin, 100,000 Slovaks, Croats, Romanians, Serbs, Slovenes, Ukrainians, Bulgarians, Greeks, etc.

Over 95 % of the Hungarian population has Hungarian as mother tongue.

About 3,000,000 of Hungarians now live in the territories of neighboring countries such as Slovakia and Romania (especially Transylvania). Those citizens have become part of those countries after the Treaty of Trianon 1920 by which Hungary lost these territories.
